My Recliner Is Here! (Plus, A Floor Lamp Review)

The recliner that I ordered for the bedroom arrived yesterday. It’s about three weeks later than the estimated delivery date, but the wait was totally worth it. I’ve been so nervous about this recliner because I chose the fabric from a pretty small swatch. My main concern was that it was going to be too blue, but it turned out to be perfect. Everything about it is perfect — the size, the color, the comfort.

This is the second piece I’ve ordered from Interior Define, and they’re both amazing. And I chose performance velvet because the fabric holds up very well against cat claws. We’ve had our living room sofa, which is also upholstered in performance velvet, for 3.5 years now. Felicity has tried and tried to scratch on that sofa, and it has held up perfectly. She wasn’t able to do a single bit of damage to the fabric in 3.5 years, so she finally gave up. So I know she won’t be able to destroy this one, either.

Even though I had measured the area about ten times and even taped off the dimensions of the chair with painters tape, I was also holding my breath until I got the chair in its spot so that I could see with my own eyes that it fit into the corner. It’s hard to tell in pictures, but the recliner is pretty large. They have a smaller one, but I was certain that I had room for the bigger one.

And there’s also plenty of room for it to recline.

It has two reclining positions, but I don’t see myself ever reclining fully while sitting here. I just want to be able to put my feet up while I’m reading. So in this position, there’s plenty of room with space left over.

As soon as the recliner arrived yesterday afternoon, I got online and started looking for a floor lamp that would work in the available space. After looking at about 50 different options on several websites, I finally decided to go with this one from Amazon (affiliate link). The bonus with this one is that it was available with overnight delivery, so it was on our front porch when I woke up this morning.

I decided on this one because I liked the arch, the smaller shade, and the color of the shade. I didn’t want a stark white shade. But I wasn’t quite sure what I’d get with a floor lamp that’s under $50. Overall, I’m quite happy with it, but I was a bit taken aback to find that I had to actually put the lamp shade together. I expected to have to assemble the lamp, but I don’t think I’ve ever bought a light that needed assembly on the actual lampshade. It has these clips that clip onto the rings, and while it worked pretty well, you can see these slight puckers on a couple of places around the rings (bottom arrow) and there’s this one place that looks like a dent (top arrow). It’s not actually a dent. It’s just that when the fabric clips into the rings like this, it’s impossible to pull it taut enough to get it perfectly flat.

Also, if you’ve ever purchased gold spray paint, you know that there are two kinds of gold finish. The first (and the preferred one) is the type that actually looks metallic. Those spray paints are harder to find and are usually more expensive. The second is the one that, up close, doesn’t look like an actual smooth, metallic finish. Instead, it looks more like a gold glittery finish that mimics a true gold/brass finish. The second one is the finish that’s on this light.

But at a distance of even just a few feet, you don’t really notice that gold glittery finish. It looks nice, and I’m actually quite pleased with it, especially for the price. I also liked that this one had the switch towards the top of the light, and it’s also dimmable. So many floor lamps today have the on/off button that’s attached to the cord and sits on the floor. I hate those. So this one will work out just fine. I really wish I could figure out how to get rid of that one area on the lampshade that looks like a dent, though. I can’t turn the shade to hide it because then the seam will show. I think I just need to work with it a little more and maybe I can get that area smoothed out better.

Anyway, now that the recliner is here, and I can see that I love everything about it, I’m feeling really motivated to get everything else done. I made a decision about this wall and how I want to handle the breaker box and TV, so stay tuned for that. But first things first. I want to get my curtains finished and get them hung, and I’m really hoping I can finish those up this weekend.
